EXCESSIVE SWEATING

Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is a common condition in which a person sweats profusely, occasionally even when there's no reason to. The condition can be a major cause of embarrassment; staining clothes, complicating social interactions, and damaging self-esteem. The condition may also lead to harmful practical consequences, making it difficult for you to get a solid grip on items such as a steering wheel, exercise equipment, or a walking cane for example.

 

Excessive sweating may affect the whole of your body, or it may only affect certain areas. Commonly affected areas include:

  • Armpits

  • Palms of your hands

  • Soles of your feet

  • Face and chest

  • Groin

 

Symptoms may include:

  • Clammy or wet palms of the hands

  • Clammy or wet soles of the feet

  • Frequent sweating

  • Noticeable sweating that soaks through clothing

 

Types and Causes of Hyperhidrosis

Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis

Sweating mainly occurs on your feet, hands, face, head, and underarms. It usually starts in childhood. About 30 to 50% of people with this type have a family history of excessive sweating.

 

Secondary Generalized Hyperhidrosis

Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis is sweating caused by a medical condition or as a side effect of certain medications. It generally starts in adulthood. With this type, you might sweat all over your body, or in just one area. You might also sweat while you are sleeping.

 

Causes of Secondary Hyperhidrosis

     •        Spinal cord injury

     •        Alcohol abuse

     •        Anxiety

     •        Diabetes

     •        Gout

     •        Heart disease

     •        Hyperthyroidism - an overactive thyroid gland

     •        Obesity

 

Treatment

Botox works by stopping the release of a chemical that signals the sweat glands to activate. Results can last for almost a year.

 

Surgery is used in extreme cases only and may result in minimal scarring. In this procedure, a physician cuts the nerves that normally activate the sweat glands.

 

Tips

  • Try changing the type of antiperspirant you use

  • Note the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant

  • Avoid spicy food

  • Shower frequently and use an antibacterial soap to combat odor

  • Avoid wearing heavy clothes

  • Try to wear several layers to hide sweat stains

  • Work with a therapist if you are experiencing anxiety
