MUSCLE WEAKNESS

Described as a lack of physical and/or muscle strength, muscle weakness is that feeling that you need to make more of an effort to perform certain tasks such as moving your arms, legs, or other muscles.

As we age, we tend to not move as much; hence we do not use our muscles as often. Muscles feel softer and there is an overall loss in the bulkiness of the area giving a flaccid appearance.

Lean body mass also decreases with time. This decrease is partly caused by a loss of muscle tissue (atrophy). The speed and amount of muscle changes seem to be caused by genes. Muscle changes often begin in the 20s in men and in the 40s in women.

Causes

  • Inactive lifestyle

  • Muscle injury or trauma

  • Age

  • Infections, such as the flu and hepatitis C

  • Chronic diseases such as diabetes, anemia, and heart disease

  • Pregnancy

  • Medicines such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, and painkillers

  • Emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, shock, and insomnia

Treatment

Ultratone is recommended, as it helps strengthen weakened muscles by delivering electrically-induced pulses to the affected area. Repeated sessions can help restore muscle function.

Regular exercise and weight training can help build muscle strength and tone.

In extreme cases, physiotherapy is recommended to help restore muscle movement and function.

Tips

  • Do not sleep too little or too much, extreme sleep patterns cause further exhaustion. Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends

  • Look for other possible causes for your fatigue, perhaps you are sad or stressed. It is better to deal with emotional challenges as opposed to ignoring them

  • Mind your diet and incorporate energy-boosting foods such as yogurt, salmon, tuna, coffee, licorice, and spinach.  Never skip breakfast

  • Stay motivated, even on days when you feel lethargic. A 20-minute walk outside is recommended if you are too tired to exercise
