THIN SKIN

Skin that easily tears or breaks. It's a common problem in older adults. As you age, the layers of your skin simply thin and become more fragile due to the reduction of collagen and elastin levels within the underlying layer of the skin known as the dermis which then leads to losing fatty tissues that makes up the hypodermis, or the deep, protective layer of the skin.

There are a number of other factors affecting the skin's thickness in addition to age:

  • Sun exposure

  • Oral and topical corticosteroids

  • Disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Amyloidosis

  •  Genetics

You can prevent thinning of the skin with aging by

  • Cutting down smoking

  • Applying a daily moisturizer to your skin to keep it supple

  • Exercising regularly and eat plenty of healthy foods to maintain your weight

  • Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day to keep your skin hydrated

  • Applying sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher when going outdoors to prevent sun damage from harmful ultraviolet rays
